We get emails every day about local animals in need. Anything from a bit shy to injuries that will more easily become infected in a shelter or conditions staff cannot properly handle in overly crowded shelters. Kitten season is now here, making space even more of an issue. These special animals barely have a chance...

Joa’s Arc needs foster homes for dogs and cats - expenses paid by Joa’s Arc and we're here to help with any questions you might have as well.

Unable to foster? That's ok!

- Hold a bake sale.
- Find us community events to attend to spread the word about our work with the animals.
- Help us table events.
- Collect cat and dog food.
- Share our wish list.
- Hold a yard sale to benefit Joa’s Arc.

Adopting a "Less Adoptable" Pet

It seemed fitting to start this week off with a successful adoption story - even if it wasn't one of your animals :)

Joa’s Arc's friend, Chrissy, writes:

I recently adopted a "less adoptable" pet earlier this month and I can honestly say it was the best choice I have ever made. I was going back and forth on what kind of dog I wanted to adopt and knew from the start I wanted to adopt an adult.

What I didn’t know was that there were so many wonderful “special needs” dogs out there that needed homes. My good friend, Debbie, had recently adopted a senior dog and I was so proud of her decision to take in something that other people just discarded that it empowered me to follow in her footsteps.

After doing some research I found Louie.

Louie is an 8 year old Great Dane who was left in a home after a foreclosure to die alone. When the home appraisal people came into the house to evaluate the home they found Louie nearly starved to death in the kitchen. Louie was then transferred to a high kill animal shelter where his kennel run was so small that he couldn’t even lie down and could barley turn around. Louie was scheduled to be euthanized later that afternoon due to the severity of his medical needs. Louie was saved by one of the staff members there who placed a call into the Great Dane rescue. The Great Dane rescue believed in a hope for Louie and gave him a chance at recovery.

Today Louie has been happily adopted by my family where we can not imagine not having him. Louie is on several medications a day and is currently going to dog physical therapy to help build up some muscle mass that was lost during his bad days. Louie is thriving when his new doggy brother, Ben, and we are so thankful everyday to have been the chosen ones for Louie.

Adopting a less adoptable animal has been the most rewarding experience imaginable and from this point forward we will always be a “rescue” family with a “special needs” dog. I consider ourselves to be the lucky ones in these stories, to be able to experience such love and appreciation from our rescued friends.

Not Exactly Special Needs... But Cute!

Some of you might remember this post: Angels In December For A Dog. Well, this time it was Joa’s Arc's Joyce that was the lone angel!

This beautiful puppy was getting chased in the street by two people outside of where Joyce works. Joyce scooped him up, got him into foster care with Jen S and named him "Kane." What a doll baby he is! No, he's not exactly "special needs", but he came across the right person to save him all the same and, let's be honest, an animal doesn't need to be anything but their sweet selves for us to love them.

I am glad to say that it took very little time for Kane to find more loving people to prove that not all people are as cruel as the ones chasing him through the streets of Camden. After being saved by Joa’s Arc's Joyce and loved up in foster care with Joa’s Arc's Jen S, Kane quickly found a new home through social networking like emails and Facebook! He's now being spoiled in a home of his own.

Valentine In The Media

There's been one cat all over the news lately as the public comes together seeking justice for her ... and that same cat a part of Joa's Arc: Valentine!

Valentine is recovering well now and getting lots of well wishes sent her way too. Thank you to the media and all those who cared enough to get the message out about her. Hopefully with the newly increased reward (now at $1,000 from the NJSPCA) and all the attention she's gotten, we'll finally have some justice for the awful act done to her.
